Advantages of Private Cloud Computing for Businesses

Perhaps the best way to begin this essay is to define what a Private Cloud computing platform is.
A Private Cloud computing platform refers to a stack of network server and storage hardware dedicated an individual or a single corporate body for the purpose of cloud computing.
The stack of hardware metamorphoses into a customizable cloud of computing and storage resources which can be easily programmed and re-programmed as you wish whenever a managed cloud computing service is used.
Why does the ability to program and re-program server resources with a Private Cloud computing platform so important?
The reason is because a dedicated server stack (which might be managed by you or outsourced) let you choose your server, storage and networking needs, purchase them, and then live with the configuration for three to five years.
Within these years, you are at liberty to add memory, which of course is not too complex to attain.
You may also need to optimize disk drives by upgrading them, this is a bit more complex.
And over time, you might wish to upgrade CPUs.
This requires changing the entire server, hence it is very complex and expensive to attain.
To look at it from the financial angle, we can use the following analogy to describe the merits of Private Cloud computing:
Assume that you are responsible for bus transportation in a metropolitan area and you have made plans to order new buses that your community would utilize for the next seven years.
Buses are of different sizes and can hold different capacities; there are 20, 30, or 50 seat configurations.
Now, you need 1,000-1,100 total seats to accommodate the population and the designed routes.
Each line is programmed to utilize maximally 20 or 50 seat bus.
Then you do a guess work and get twenty 20-seat buses and twelve 50 seat buses and assume they would be efficient for the coming seven years.
It all looks like an interesting puzzle worked out right?
Even if the whole business is done quite well, the possibility that there would be inefficiencies and wasted resources at the end of the day cannot of course be ruled out.
Rather than subjecting yourself to living with the same resource configuration for many years, imagine that you could purchase a "cloud with 1,000 bus seats" and re-design those seats into whatever size you want and as you wish.
You can create buses with a single seat or you can have one bus with a thousand seats.
With such amazing power at your disposal, it means whenever you have got a convention, you can make 4 x 200 seat buses to shuttle between hotels and the conference center.
This flexibility is really valuable and powerful because it lets you have more seats in use at any time, thus needing significantly fewer seats as it provides a better experience.
You can call this "cloud transportation," and this is every transportation officials dream.
What you should do now is to assume every bus is a server and it becomes private cloud computing, the ultimate dream of every IT finance manager.

Cost

The most interesting part is that the total savings of idle capacity can be passed to you.
What it would cost to get a well designed Private Cloud computing platform is not up to that of a dedicated server on a per server basis!
Hence, the flexibility and the ability to deliver a lesser cost of ownership are not its only advantages.
Private Cloud can also be totally cheaper if it is managed properly.
That is the benefit of Private Cloud computing.

A Pertinent New Requirement!

We have seen the power of the flexibility provided by Private Cloud computing. However, it brings in a new level of difficulty that was not there before. There are specific abilities that must be established in order to obtain the advantages of a Private Cloud. To continue with the transportation analogy, imagine that you have a new on-demand flexibility for your buses. The next thing is to seek a staff of people to monitor the flow of traffic and help in re-designing the buses using more or less seats according to the demand and utilization level. These people will work hard to reduce the waiting time and route times for those who want a seat on any of the buses.

While we agree that the flexibility is powerful, there is need to get the most out of it with fairly complex abilities that would change the configurations and get the full benefit of such flexibility. You do a similar thing in the computing world; you monitor the server, network and storage resources. If any revs up issues, you have to provide it with more resources. You should also not forget to reduce the allocated amount of resources to a server that is not in need of it.
If you do not do this, you make it idle and not available for any other server that might be in need of it. This process of allocating resources is powerful although it is also considered to be expensive. So, you should be very much focused when programming your Private Cloud. If you are focused enough, you will know how to change the cloud configurations automatically in recorded time so that resources are found where they should be and when they are needed.
It should turn off cloud servers that are not being used and turn them back on when needed within the blink of an eye. To do this, you need to install a small and very smart software that would monitor your server, memory, storage, and network resources constantly. The software would also compare that to work-loads and it will forecast and estimate which of the servers requires more resources. After the estimation process, it should be able to allocate resources automatically within a short period so that you will always utilize the cloud computing resources efficiently.
